Board of
Education
Rally

October 2006

The Power to Influence!

Innovations students, parents and teachers traveled to Hilo on Thursday, October 6, to hold signs and wave balloons to let Board of Education members know they were dissatisfied with the decision to fire Charter School Executive Director, Jim Shon. The decision was not in the best interest of children and did not show support for charter schools. Charter Schools were also concerned about talk of the Board of Education removing funding from budgets for charter schools for next school year. Attending the rally gave students an opportunity to practice their power to influence others. The huge crowd of charter school supporters was noticed by the Board members who came out to talk with parents and students and listen to their concerns. Having the Board members meet and talk with the students, teachers and parents made it all worth the five hour trip!

Fifth and sixth grade students traveled to Hilo in the school van driven by Mrs. Hiro. It was a tense ride over and back because of the lightning storm that dumped a lot of rain all day long. But the students arrived happy and ready to rally!

Will and Kate Jacobson brought the balloons and helium for the rally. Thalia made sure everyone at the rally was offered a ballon to show their support for charter schools. A big mahalo to these active parents and all the parents who wrote and submitted testimony and/or attended the rally!
